About Us
With decades of experience in private equity, business development, and social innovation, Urban Catalyst empowers the growth of businesses providing quality jobs for underserved communities. Urban Catalyst offers flexible capital for expansion, to cash out minority investors and to provide liquidity for founders/primary shareholders in mezzanine and non-control equity recapitalization formats. Urban Catalyst partners with successful entrepreneurs to bring together the attributes of sophisticated management practices applied to financial and operating matters as well as business issues that fall within the environmental, social and governance disciplines.
Urban Catalyst believes overall community well being stems from effective stewardship of economic, social and environmental resources by all stakeholders in the community. As much as possible, Urban Catalyst seeks to partner with businesses in communities that have a complement of stakeholders committed to the elements of a strong ecosystem: improving education and health care systems, adequate affordable housing and effective job training programs.
Urban Catalyst believes that value creation is enhanced when businesses believe in operational excellence, investment in their employees and their larger role in society through active engagement in community development and prudent management of the business’ environmental footprint.
Michael Gilligan, founder + CEO, is a co-founder of Heritage Partners, a middle market private equity firm that partners with entrepreneurs and family-owned businesses to grow. Urban Catalyst grew out of Michael's keen interest in seeing private capital play an intentional role in supporting a commitment to quality jobs for underserved communities. He has served on the boards of IMPAC, Jordan's Foods, Enterprise NewsMedia and many other Heritage portfolio companies. He has also served as board chair of LIFT, a poverty alleviation organization, and currently sits on the Boards of YouthBuild USA and City Year's flagship operation in Boston.
